Shapefile
The ESRI shapefile format is used for vector data in a GIS environment. They consist of a minimum of three files: main file (.shp), index file (.shx), and a database file (.dbf). These files are zipped together for the CoastWatch ocean winds products, since all three (or more) files must be present to properly make use of the format. NOAA CoastWatch ocean winds shapefile products include the following fields:

Field Description
LON Longitude as measured from the Prime Meridian
LAT Latitude as measured from the Equator.
DATE Date in MM/DD/YYYY format.
TIME 24-hour formatted time. HH:MM
DIR 360 degree direction with 0 being due North
SPD Wind speed measured in meters per second. m/s
DISPDIR Display direction for GIS Packages. (360 degree inverted wind direction)
SPDKTS Wind speed measured in knots.

For example,

LON 2.910000
LAT 1.030000
DATE 01/09/2004
TIME 09:57
DIR 217.0000
SPD 1.1000
DISPDIR -217.0000
SPDKTS 2.1
