POES Sea Surface Temperature Product Overview

NOAA CoastWatch provides sea surface temperature (SST) products derived from NOAA's Polar Operational Environmental Satellites (POES). These images are produced by NESDIS Information Processing Division (IPD) and updated four times daily. Sea surface temperature products from POES for the coastal United States are available through this website or through CoastWatch Regional Nodes.

Image information is found in the product file's naming convention and information sidebar or banner. The colorbar (as illustrated to the right) shows the relationship between colors shown in the image and temperature. The following information is from a typical sidebar:

Product Type: Sea Surface Temperature
Satellite: NOAA-15, NOAA-16, or NOAA-17
Resolution (Res:): 1.1 km -- the geographic size of each pixel in the image
Date and Time: A 'Day of Year' and YYYY/MM/DD in UTC.
