Sea Nettles Glossary:

E-Mail:

We will use your e-mail address to identify the sender of each data record. This assures us of quality control of our input data, an essential part of any scientific investigation. We will also keep you informed of any interesting Nettle News if you wish.

Date Seen:

Input the date in the mm/dd/yy format. e.g. Feb.28,2001 = 02/28/01.

Time Seen:

This is the exact time of your sighting. Specify am/pm or military time(24:00 hr).

Water Temp:

If you have the temperature. Please use degrees Centigrade. It is ok to leave this blank, we can find temperatures from our models.

Air Temp:

If you have the temperature. Please use degrees Centigrade. If blank we can derive from NWS data.

Water Salinity:

Salinity in ppt. We will derive this from our model, but some ground truth is always welcome!

Water Clarity:

A fairly subjective measurement. Clear:Cloudy:Opaque.

Cloud Cover:

This is a close estimation of the amount of sky that is covered in clouds at the time the sighting was made.

Size:

This is just an approximation.  Some jellyfish sting so it is safer to give us an approximation than an actually size.

Jelly Name:

Here you will need to refer the Jellyfish glossary to acurately identify the specific jellyfish that was seen.  If you are not sure use the freelance form and give and acurate description and if possible email a picture to dockwatch@disl.org

Location -- Site ID:

This is the site ID you chose when registering.  You are only to use this if your sighting is at the location the Site ID was assigned to.  If you are not at that location you need to provide the Longitude and Latitude

Location -- Latitude & Longitude:

Provide the Longitude and Latitude of your sighting location.  Northern Latitudes and Western Longitudes are assumed as this is for Chesapeake Bay. Provide the decimal degrees: e.g. 38.79 , 76.52

The map icon can be used to interactively select a sighting location using the online mapping feature. Clicking on the map will place a "Sighting Location" marker on the map. When the marker reflects your location, select "Submit Location" and the latitude and longitude will be updated on the sighting form.

Additional Info:

This is where you may add any additional information that you may feel will be helpful to the scientists that review the data. For a new location a general description of the type of site would be appreciated. i.e. a marina dock, fishing pier, sandy beach or bridge.
