NOAA CoastWatch Fish Tracking class. This course aims to teach students about satellite data and how to use it with fish telemetry data in fishery research and management!

Expect to spend about 2-3h/week in live sessions and at least 2-4h/week on your own to go over materials and to work on the homework assignments. Instructors will be available during the scheduled office hours to answer questions. You can also ask questions on the Slack discussion platform which the instructors will be monitoring and providing answers. The last session will be dedicated to a class project.

Learning Goals:

  • You will become familiar with several ocean parameters and how to choose among data sets
  • You will practice using the ERDDAP platform to visualize, subset and download data
  • You will learn how R code can be used to interface with ERDDAP servers for matching fish telemetry data with satellite environmental data
  • You will use the NOAA CoastWatch Data Portal for visualizing satellite data, layering multiple geolocated data sets together, and other functions
  • You will apply what you learn in homework assignments and in a group project
  • You will leave the class with ready-to-use workflows
